Medical Treatments for Hair Loss

non-surgical-treatment-section2-image

Hair loss can occur for many reasons and there are several treatments for each unique patient. Just like there is not one cause for hair loss, there is not one ‌hair restoration treatment that will be effective for every patient. While some patients may require surgical hair restoration, for others, medical treatments for hair loss could be an effective solution.

At Burbank Hair Transplant in Los Angeles, the medications we may recommend for our patients include minoxidil, finasteride, and spironolactone.

Rogaine (minoxidil)

Rogaine minoxidil treatments can be an effective option for general thinning of the hair in both men and women, when the root cause of hair loss is age or hormones. Most effective when used during the early stages of hair loss, Rogaine is a topical medication which is applied directly to the scalp daily.

Often used in conjunction with other treatments, Rogaine works to stimulate dormant hair follicles by dilating the surrounding blood vessels to increase blood supply. When used properly, it can support new hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

Several months of treatment are typically required before patients will notice an improvement in hair coverage, and patients require ongoing treatment to maintain their results.

While Rogaine can be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription, it’s worthwhile seeking professional advice before commencing treatment. A doctor can help determine if it will be effective in treating your personal condition, what the most suitable dosage will be, and ensure you’re following the correct application.

Propecia (finasteride)

Propecia is a prescription medication for male-pattern baldness that actively blocks the process of converting testosterone into 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—a hormone that’s ‌responsible for hair loss.

DHT can cause hair follicles to shrink, leading to eventual hair loss. By inhibiting the production of DHT, Propecia can support the hair follicles to grow strong, healthy hair and slow the hair loss process.

Propecia is an oral medication which is taken daily and is most effective when treatment is commenced at the onset of hair loss. It typically takes up to four months before you’ll be able to achieve a noticeable improvement, with patients requiring ongoing treatment.

Aldactone (spironolactone)

A treatment for female-pattern hair loss, Aldactone can help to increase hair thickness and prevent androgenetic hair loss caused by a hormonal imbalance.

A synthetic medication that’s only available by prescription, Aldactone hair loss treatment works by preventing the production of androgens, which are believed to damage hair follicles and cause hair loss in women.

Aldactone has been shown to be effective in around 40% of women suffering from hair loss, however, it can take some time before patients see an improvement.

As with most treatments for hair loss, patients typically require ongoing treatment for sustained results. Treatment with Aldactone is not suitable for women who are trying to get pregnant.

Vitamins

In some cases, a vitamin deficiency can be a primary or contributing cause of hair loss. If a blood test identifies a deficiency in one or more nutrients (such as biotin, iron, or zinc) which are critical for healthy hair growth, we may recommend taking vitamin supplements.

Some of the most effective vitamins for hair growth that we may recommend include Viviscal or Nutrafol.

Common Questions About Medical Treatments for Hair Loss

The primary difference between the two treatments is that Propecia is a treatment for male-pattern hair loss, while Rogaine can be used to treat both male and female-pattern hair loss. Rogaine can also be purchased as an over-the-counter medication, while Propecia is a prescription medication.

Propecia was developed specifically for men. As the treatment carries a high risk of causing birth defects, it should never be prescribed for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. In most cases, alternative treatments would be recommended for women before considering Propecia.
